CIRCLE SURF is a product development project.

01

Ideation — October 2022

The project originates from a challenge set by a French company: to find a solution to valorize waste from neoprene wetsuits and beach flip-flops, with the goal of keeping these materials within the surfing ecosystem by giving them a new function.

Product Definition — October 2022

The concept of developing a PAD (traction pad), a functional component applied to surfboards, is established.
This marks the beginning of the technical structuring of the product and its performance objectives.

Design — 2023

Technical development and product design begin, alongside the definition of initial molds and processing parameters. The project evolves between laboratory and industrial environments.

Prototyping — 2023

Initial trials are carried out using different formulations and production conditions. Promising solutions are identified, as well as limitations in terms of cohesion, flexibility, and in-use performance.

Industrial Development — Late 2023

The focus shifts to process optimization and pilot-scale production. Several industrial trials are conducted, with continuous adjustments to materials, densities, and processes — with both progress and necessary setbacks to stabilize the product.

Validation — 2024

The project enters a consolidation phase.
New configurations are tested, including bi-layer structures, improving performance in terms of comfort, grip, and resistance.

Technical Reorientation — Late 2024

Despite progress, the weight and behavior of the developed solutions reveal limitations.
A new approach based on cork is introduced, marking a significant shift in the development path.

New Prototyping — 2025

Trials with cork show significant improvements — weight reduction, better impact absorption, and a more natural aesthetic. The solution gains consistency and stronger alignment with the project’s positioning.

Functional Validation — 2025

With pilot production, new challenges emerge — particularly regarding the adhesion of the PAD to the surfboard. Extensive testing is carried out, involving partners such as 3M, along with adjustments to design and geometry.

Adjustments and Continuity

The project remains under development, focusing on resolving the critical interface between the PAD and the fixation system. This journey reflects the nature of innovation projects: iterative, demanding, and built on continuous learning.
